Cardio is either touted as the most important thing for weight loss.

Or it is demonized.

Some people love it. Others hate it.

The simple fact is you NEED to include it!

And you need to include a variety of different types of cardio workouts to get the best results possible.

Too often we think that "cardio" has to mean running or biking or spending hours on a treadmill...or dreadmill hehe...

But it doesn't have to mean ANY of those things, unless you enjoy doing them!

While you do want to include both high intensity interval training AND steady-state cardio to get results, there isn't only one way to do this!

You can have FUN with the different cardio workouts you create and use different workout designs and interval set ups to help you reach a variety of goals.
Whether you want to lose fat, build strength, increase your power, maximize your work capacity or improve your endurance, cardio is key!

Now you may be thinking....

How can "cardio" workouts do all of that?!

It all comes down to the exercises, workout designs and interval set ups you use! 

By using a variety of work to rest intervals while mixing up the types of movements, workout designs and even the TOOLS, you use, you can help yourself improve your overall conditioning to set PRs in your races and even get leaner and stronger!

Below I want to share 3 tips I use to design cardio workouts to help you get better results faster!
3 Tips To Get Better Results From Your Cardio Workouts!
#1: Don't Ignore The Importance Of REST!
You wouldn't think that the first tip would be about REST would you?

When we think about doing cardio, we often think that eliminating rest will make the workout HARDER and therefore BETTER.

But that isn't how it works!

Less rest isn't always better!

When we reduce rest, we also eliminate our chance to RECOVER from the previous interval of work.
The less you are able to recover between rounds, the lower your output is the following round. AKA you get TIRED so you can't go as hard.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing and can have benefits. Especially if we want to improve our endurance, less rest can be key.

However, include a variety of interval set ups, some with even MORE rest is also important.

More rest means we can recover more between rounds to be able to work HARDER each and every round, which in turn can help us improve our speed and power!

By including a range of interval set ups in our workouts we can not only improve our cardiovascular health but also our conditioning so we can run or cycle further FASTER. Personal records on longer runs or rides means not only improving our endurance but also our SPEED and our work capacity!

If weight loss or fat loss is your goal, including both less rest in some workouts and more rest in others is key to help you maximize fat loss, improve your insulin sensitivity and even BUILD lean muscle!

But not only can you adjust your work to rest intervals, you can even use a few different cardio workout designs to speed up your results!
#2: Don't Just Use Intervals! Try Timed Circuits And Density Sets!
Interval training is often our go-to for cardio workouts when we aren't doing steady-state training. And with good reason!

Interval training is an amazing way to burn a ton of calories in a short time and improve everything from our endurance to our power output! 

You can even build strength with some killer interval workouts!

BUT to get the best results possible from your workouts, your cardio routines shouldn't ONLY be interval training.
While intervals are great, you should also include Timed Circuits and Density Sets in your cardio routine to help you burn fat, improve your conditioning and even build strength!

Density sets especially can help you improve your work capacity and burn more calories in less time.

Because they allow you to perform a greater volume of work in less time, you can get killer results without having to spend hours at the gym!

And if you want to be able to work harder for longer, which is key if you want to PR in your next race or continue to progress in your training, density sets can help you do just that!

To do a density set, set a timer for anywhere from 5-30 minutes and complete as many rounds as possible of a circuit, or circuits, in that time. By giving yourself a time limit and by designing the workout to allow you to create a high volume in that time, you can improve your conditioning and torch calories!

Timed circuits are another great way to help you increase your training volume without spending a ton of time in the gym. And they can help you build strength as you burn fat.

Especially if you aren't a real "cardio fan," timed circuits can be a great way for you to do resistance training in a way that will allow you to reap the metabolic benefits of cardio!

To do a timed circuit, you'll set a specific volume of work to be completed and then try to do those moves, reps and sets as fast as you can! Time how long it takes you so you can work to beat that time next time!

Too often we think that cardio and strength training have to be at opposite ends of the workout spectrum. But your weight training CAN be cardio and your cardio CAN build strength!

Using these different designs, you can easily include weights into your cardio routine to help you build lean muscle mass so you can burn more fat even at rest! Lean muscle is key if we want a healthy, strong metabolism!
#3: Focus Mainly On Compound And Hybrid Moves!
Often if we have a "problem" area, say like under arm fat or that lower belly bulge, we try to spot reduce the area and include more isolation moves.

But if you want to get better and faster results from your cardio training, you should almost AVOID these isolation moves except as potentially active rest.

When you create your cardio workouts, you want to focus on compound and hybrid moves.

You want to include moves that target those "problem areas" but while working more muscles at once so you burn more fat and calories in less time!

These compound and hybrid movements will also be more taxing for your body and elevate your heart rate quicker. 
So if your interval of work is 20 seconds, a compound or hybrid movement can easily be used to get your blood pumping and the sweat dripping in those 20 seconds! 

Whereas an isolation move will NOT get you those same results, and may not even elevate your heart rate at all during the 20 seconds, even though it is fatiguing the muscle. 

This does, however, make isolation moves good occasionally as active recovery. It's why focused core work in cardio routines can be beneficial. You're honing in on those "problem areas" while using that more isolated movement to give yourself time to bring your heart rate down!

But, if you want the best results possible in the shortest amount of time, focus your cardio routines on compound and hybrid movements!

They'll give you more bang for your buck in less time. 

And if you even add some resistance, such as weights or bands, to those compound or hybrid moves, not only can you increase your calorie burn, but you can even build strength!

Including weights can be a great way to improve your strength endurance, work capacity and even help you burn more fat (because more muscle means we use more calories even at rest!). 

Plus if you can only get to the gym a few times a week, using weights in your cardio routines can help you get the strength benefits of resistance training while reaping the metabolic benefits of cardio all at once!
